Égaux Sells

AUSTIN, TX
In a single moment, a whole perspective can change. Being confronted by the unsettling and the insecure shifts a scene from calm to chaos, veering away from safety and into the great unknown. Kendra Sells (she/they), who performs under the moniker Égaux Sells, writes songs that capture this anxiety, darting between modes and moods that ensure eerie and ethereal plays on the soulful and the spidery.
In between releases from her Austin neo-jazz group BluMoon, Kendra presents All in Your Head. It’s an EP that imagines uneasy situations—opener “Your Cut” details being hounded for money—and exposes the ugly reality of others. “Wondering//Bad Doctors,” with its industrial bent and frequent tempo changes, is as anxious and unpredictable as a trip to the waiting room, and lead single “Call Me When Ur Dead” stacks a swaying instrumental against lyrics that torch a former flame. Even if these moments seem lived-in and understood at first, each track is stuffed with multi-part movements that dart between influences, intentions, and imaginations. It’s an experience that requires repeat visits to Kendra’s world. It’s lush, jagged, winking, and exciting—it might get stuck in your head.

"[Égaux] Sells appears in threes on the cover of her debut EP, All in Your Head. In fact, the BluMoon frontperson wears many faces in the artwork, with self-portraits surrounding her photo and each sporting a different mood. Such distinctions introduce the Quiet Year release well, as the San Marcos producer jumps from soulful harmonies and retro club beats to heavy metal guitars across these seven tracks, and often within the same song.” - Rachel Rascoe, The Austin Chronicle
